PH's John Marvin KOs Malaysian foe for 2nd boxing gold
KUALA LUMPUR — (UPDATED) In one of the most impressive performances by a Filipino athlete in the 2017 Southeast Games, boxer John Marvin stopped his Malaysian opponent in just 21 seconds to rule the 81-kilogram (light-heavyweight) division.
Marvin silenced the hundreds of flag-waving Malaysians at MiTEC's Hall 8 in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday afternoon, as he unloaded a four-punch combination on Adli Hafidz B. Mohd Pauzi as soon as the opening bell rang.
The development stunned the fans in attendance, who looked on in shock as Marvin, whose dad is British and mother Teresita Tupas is a Filipina, celebrated with his coaches while the Malaysian was consoled in his corner.
"I'm here to box for the Philippines, and I'm here to win," declared Marvin, a Filipino-Brit boxer who is making his first appearance in the SEA Games.
