PH judo pins medal hopes on Fil-Japanese athletes
KUALA LUMPUR — Two gold medals. That's the production target in the minds of the Philippine national judo team when it plunges into action in the Southeast Asian Games beginning Saturday at KL Convention Center here.
“We are trying to get four medals, two gold medals, but we are assured of one sa event ni Kiyomi (Watanabe),” Philippine Judo Federation president David Carter said recently. “Lahat naman sila medal potentials, pero mahirap mangako sa makukuha.”
Watanabe, who hails from Cebu City but grew up in Japan, is eyeing a third straight gold in the women’s 63-kilogram division.
She earned a bronze — in the 70-kilogram class — in her first SEA Games, in 2011 in Jakarta.
The four other Filipino-Japanese judokas who are also eyeing gold medals: are Kohei Kohagura (81 kilograms), and 20-year-old twin brothers Keisei (73 kilograms) and Shugen Nakano (66 kilograms) in the men’s division. In the women's division, Mariya Takahasi, 16, will compete in the 70-kilogram class.
