PH advances to semis of women's volleyball
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- (UPDATED) The Philippine women's volleyball team opened their campaign in the 29th Southeast Asian Games on a bright note with a straight sets romp over hosts Malaysia here at the MiTEC Hall 11.
After a shaky start that saw them give up three straight aces, the Filipinas got their bearings and cruised to a 25-18, 25-11, 25-16 victory on Thursday afternoon in front of a loud contingent of Philippine fans.
Their best performance came in the second set, when they surged to an 8-0 lead behind a hail of aces from star setter Kim Fajardo.
The Filipinas were never threatened, with Malaysia struggling on all fronts.
In the third frame, Jaja Santiago and Aby Maraño took turns in puncturing Malaysia's floor defense, before Alyssa Valdez came in off the bench to finish off the match.
