Marinero upsets Tanduay, advances to semis
MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) Marinerong Pilipino has yet to run out of miracles in the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup.
With their backs against the wall for the second straight game, the Skippers pulled off another sensational upset, holding off the Tanduay Rhum Masters, 65-64, in their do-or-die showdown on Tuesday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
The heart-stopping victory gave Marinerong Pilipino its seventh straight win, and allowed the Skippers to clinch a semifinals berth in the Foundation Cup – their very first conference in the league. They also defeated Tanduay, 74-72, in their first meeting last Thursday to force the deciding contest.
The Skippers will take on the No. 2 Cignal HD Hawkeyes in the best-of-three semifinals starting on Thursday, at the same Pasig venue.
Two of Marinerong Pilipino's new signings, Renzo Subido and Robert Herndon, were the heroes of the game. Subido, formerly of AMA Online Education, spearheaded the Skippers' comeback from a 10-point third-quarter deficit, while Herndon converted the go-ahead shot with 2:15 left to play.
"When we were down by 10 at the start of the fourth quarter, the doubt was setting in," admitted Marinerong Pilipino coach Koy Banal. "But we've been in this kind of situation before."
