Maamo opens Aiba bid vs Botswana foe

MANILA, Philippines -  Flyweight Dannel Maamo drew Botswana’s Mahomed Otukile in the first round and Cuban top seed Yosvany Veitia in his group in the eliminations of the 17th AIBA World Championship which starts Friday at the Sporthalle in Hamburg, Germany.

But Maamo will slug it out with the African Saturday at 2 p.m. (8 p.m. Manila time) with a victory lining up the Filipino bet against the veteran Veitia, the 2015 World Championships silver medalist at fly and 2013 worlds bronze medal winner at light-fly, in the round-of-16.

As top seed, Veitia drew a first round bye.

Lightfly Rogen Ladon, on the other hand, kicks off his campaign Sunday after drawing a first-round bye being the division’s No. 5 seed. He will face the winner between Kazakhstan’s Zhomart Yerzhan and Michael Tello of Guatemala.
