Kvitova books Bellis quarterfinal in Stanford
STANFORD, CA, USA - No.2 seed Petra Kvitova had little trouble in her Bank of the West Open debut against Kateryna Bondarenko, easing into the quarterfinals in straight sets.
Playing in her first match at Stanford, Kvitova put in a dominating service performance and needed just 60 minutes to complete the 6-2, 6-2 victory.
“It’s nice to play somewhere for the first time after so many years on the tour,” Kvitova said in her on-court interview.
“I served very well, and I was just trying to play my game - which I always try, and sometimes that works, sometimes not. Kateryna is a dangerous player; she can catch lots of balls and I knew that I had to be focused and just play aggressive.”
The pair came into the matchup locked 2-2 in their previous head-to-head record, but their last meeting came at the 2012 Olympics in London and Bondarenko, ranked No.111, is still searching for her first back-to-back match wins since Dubai.
Kvitova stayed more aggressive than her opponent, striking 31 winners against Bondarenko’s 11 and just 10 unforced errors to 11. She broke the Ukrainian four times in two sets, and didn’t allow Bondarenko to bring up a single break point in a stellar service display.
The two-time Wimbledon champion will take on No.8 seed CiCi Bellis in the next round after the 18-year-old American brushed past Alize Cornet 6-3, 6-2 yesterday.
