Injury forces Sharapova out of Toronto

TORONTO, Canada - Five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova will miss the 2017 Rogers Cup presented by National Bank in Toronto due to injury, Tennis Canada announced on Thursday.

“I am so sorry to be missing Rogers Cup this year,” Sharapova said. “I am so appreciative to the tournament for the wildcard and my fans in Toronto for their support. I am disappointed that injury is keeping me from the tennis court once again, and I will work as hard as I can to return to the game I love as soon as possible.”

Sharapova had previously been awarded a wildcard to the event, where she was runner-up in 2009.

Pain in her left forearm also caused Sharapova to withdraw from her second round match in Stanford on Wednesday.

Sharapova's wildcard will instead be allocated to rising Canadian star Bianca Andreescu, who originally received a qualifying wildcard. The qualifying wildcard will go to Canada's Carol Zhao.

“We wish Maria the best and hope she is able to return to the court 100 percent healthy soon,” said Karl Hale, Rogers Cup Toronto tournament director. “We know many of our fans were excited to see her play, but we have a fabulous line-up of athletes coming to Toronto next week with all of the Top 10 players in the world, including defending champion Simona Halep and Venus Williams, plus Genie Bouchard and all of our Canadians. Our spectators are in for an amazing week of tennis and entertainment.”
