Iloilo City honors grandmaster Eugene Torre
ILOILO CITY -- The City Government here through a resolution passed by the City Council recognized Ilonggo grandmaster Eugene Torre's achievements on Sunday afternoon, August 6.
Torre was in Iloilo City August 4 to 6 for an exhibition game with Ilonggo woodpushers, including Rafael Lazarus Zulueta-Salazar, and for the seminar of chess trainers in the city and province.
Councilor Liezl Zulueta-Salazar with Iloilo City Sports Development Division head Jojo Castro presented to Torre a copy of the citation and the resolution unanimously approved by the City Council, after the latter’s exhibition game with woodpushers at SM City Iloilo in Mandurriao district.
The resolution recognized the “unparalleled achievements in the field of sports of Grandmaster Eugene Torre, an Ilonggo chess legend and Asia’s first Grandmaster.”
Torre was born in Iloilo City on November 4, 1951, and was the first chess grandmaster in Asia at the age of 22.
