Generals get back on track after proving steadier than Altas
In a back-and-forth affair between two desperate teams on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre, free throws eventually ended up as the difference between them.
Emilio Aguinaldo College’s last 11 points came courtesy of free throws as it edged out University of Perpetual Help, 61-57, for a much-needed win in the NCAA 93 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
While Sidney Onwubere was the game-long force with a total of 21 points and 17 rebounds, he also had more than enough help in the last five minutes. “To be honest, we really gave all our heart in this game. Since last game na in the first round, we really had to win this game,” head coach Ariel Sison said.
Jerome Garcia’s three broke a tied tally of 47-all and busted open a 12-5 burst that proved to be the pivotal push that returned the Generals to the win column now at 4-5.
Through that run, Onwubere, Jeric Diego, Raymund Pascua, and Francis Munsayac made good on all but one of their 10 free throws. “Relieved ako kasi sabi ko sa kanila, yung (pagkatalo namin) sa close games, kailangan nang ma-overcome. ‘Di na pwedeng sayang lang,” Sison said.
