Frayna falls anew, slides out of Top 20

MANILA, Philippines – Janelle Mae Frayna suffered her second straight defeat, this time against Latvian Linda Kruminda to slide out of the top 20 after seven rounds of the Women's International Open in Erfurt, Germany Thursday night.

The loss came a day after Frayna, 21, fell to fourth seed and fellow Woman Grandmaster Evgeniya Doluhanova of Ukraine that sent her outside the top 10.

The pair of stinging setbacks kept country’s Olympiad top board player stranded with a score of 3.5 points, which was good for 25th to 34th spots.

Frayna started out strong as she zoomed to an unbeaten start highlighted by a win over WGM Galina Strutinskaia of Russia and three draws against WGMs Joanna Majdan of Poland and Ilze Berzina of Latvia and Woman International Master Nino Khomeriki of Georgia.

Her other triumph came at the expense of German Victoria Wagner of Germany in the opening round.

Frayna hopes to sweep her final two games including an eighth-round duel with Vietnam-born German Nguyen Ha Tanh currently being played at press time to gain more rating points.
