Former champion Sharapova withdraws from Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, OH, USA - An ongoing left arm injury has forced Maria Sharapova out of her third tournament this summer, as the 2011 Western & Southern Open champion has withdrawn from the 2017 event.

Sharapova arrived in Cincinnati on Friday and made the decision to withdraw after consulting with the medical staff on Saturday.

A continuing left arm injury forced 2011 champion out of the Western & Southern Open, which begins on Monday.
The same injury also forced her to withdraw from the Bank of the West Classic after winning her first match, and the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

“I arrived in Cincinnati yesterday eager to play. However, following the doctor’s advice on-site, as a precaution for the US Open, I am unfortunately withdrawing from the tournament with the left forearm injury I sustained in Stanford,” Sharapova said. “I want to thank the tournament for the wildcard opportunity and really look forward to competing here next year.”

Sharapova was due to play French Open champion and No.12w Jelena Ostapenko in a highly-anticipated first round clash.

Ostapenko will play either a qualifier or lucky loser, which will be drawn following the conclusion of the qualifying tournament on Sunday.

Sharapova previously missed over two months of the season, including Wimbledon, with a leg injury suffered in Rome.
