Chung, #NextGenATP Reach Montreal Third Round

Three #NextGenATP players, Hyeon Chung, Borna Coric and Ernesto Escobedo, who are all vying for a place at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan later this year, got off to winning starts on Tuesday at the Coupe Rogers. All three players feature in the Top 10 of the Emirates ATP Race To Milan.

Chung, 21, withstood 16 aces from 2014 semi-finalist Feliciano Lopez in a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(3) win over two hours and 15 minutes to set up a second-round encounter against ninth seed David Goffin or Yuichi Sugita. With no breaks of serve in the third set, Chung broke clear at 4/2 in the tie-break to wrap up victory.

Hyeon Chung, who lost in the Montreal first round two years ago, held his nerve against Feliciano Lopez on Tuesday
Earlier in the day, Coric recorded just his second win in three appearances at the Canadian ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament, held this year in Montreal, with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Russian lucky loser and former World No. 8 Mikhail Youzhny in 69 minutes.

The 20-year-old Croatian will next play top-seeded Spaniard and three-time former champion Rafael Nadal, who with a run to this week’s semi-finals will return to No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. Coric has a 2-1 lead in his FedEx ATP Head2Head series against Nadal, with their last meeting coming in August 2016 at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

American lucky loser Escobedo, a late replacement for No. 10 seed Tomas Berdych (rib injury), made the most of his main draw spot by knocking out Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-6(4), 6-4 in 86 minutes. Escobedo will play Robin Haase of the Netherlands in the second round.

Paolo Lorenzi, 35, set up a clash against Nick Kyrgios of Australia after overcoming American Frances Tiafoe 7-6(3), 0-6, 6-2 in just over two hours. Italian Lorenzi has finished runner-up in two ATP World Tour clay-court finals this season (Quito and Umag).

Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta, the No. 11 seed, beat fellow tournament debutant Karen Khachanov of Russia 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in 86 minutes. He awaits South African Kevin Anderson, last week’s Citi Open finalist, or Dudi Sela of Israel.
