Berdych Cruises In Los Cabos Opener
Top seed Tomas Berdych wasted no time getting down to business on Wednesday at Abierto Mexicano de Tenis Mifel presentado por Cinemex, recording a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win over #NextGenATP Aussie Akira Santillan to reach the quarter-finals in Los Cabos.
“It was a quick match, but I’m glad about the way I played tonight,” said Berdych. “It was a nice welcome from the crowd, so I’m looking forward to playing as many matches as possible.”
Berdych broke the 20 year old five times to advance in under an hour. The Czech player is still carrying the form that brought him to the Wimbledon semi-finals this past month and will be a strong contender to take the title
Next up for Berdych is seventh seed Adrian Mannarino, who cruised past Bjorn Fratangelo 6-1, 6-1. Mannarino has been in red-hot form lately, reaching the final this past June in Antalya (l. Sugita) and advancing to the fourth round at Wimbledon.
Second seed Sam Querrey survived an opening-round scare against qualifier and fellow American Evan King, rallying from an early break down in the final set to prevail 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(2)
“Evan is a tricky player. He’s been grinding away for a few years, so hopefully he can keep this going and have more [ATP World Tour] main draws in the future,” said Querrey. “I’ve got to do everything a little bit better in the next round, but sometimes you just have to battle your way through the first match in these tournaments.”
King, No. 347 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, won his first ATP World Tour main draw match on Tuesday. He showed no fear in the biggest match of his career, but Querrey used his experience to dominate the final-set tie-break. He tasted success earlier this year in Mexico by defeating Rafael Nadal in the Acapulco final.
Querrey will take on Frenchman Vincent Millot, who scored the upset of the night over sixth seed Fernando Verdasco 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. The win puts the 31 year old, currently No. 165 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, into his first ATP World Tour quarter-final.
The second quarter of the draw will feature an all-#NextGenATP quarter-final after Taylor Fritz ousted third seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-6(5), 6-4. The 19 year old is through to his first ATP World Tour quarter-final of the season. Fritz picked up his first win over a player inside the Top 10 of the Emirates ATP Rankings when he defeated Marin Cilic this past March at the BNP Paribas Open.
Fritz will take on #NextGenATP player Thanasi Kokkinakis in the last eight after the Aussie came through a tight match against Peter Polansky 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4). The 21 year old fought hard to advance in two hours and seven minutes, putting himself into his first ATP World Tour quarter-final.
Fourth seed Feliciano Lopez saved 12 of 13 break points against him en route to defeating Matthew Ebden 6-4, 6-4. Next up for the Spaniard is Damir Dzumhur, who led 5-3 against #NextGenATP player Quentin Halys when the Frenchman was forced to retire with an abdominal strain.
Lopez/Marrero Move On
Third seeds Marc Lopez and David Marrero advanced past their opening round against Taro Daniel and Dzumhur 6-3, 7-5. The Spaniards will face wild cards Ebden and Manuel Sanchez in the quarter-finals.
Jonathan Erlich and Andreas Siljestrom powered past Hugo Nys and Matt Reid 6-4, 7-6(4) in one hour and 23 minutes, setting up a clash in the last eight with Sergio Galdos and Roberto Maytin. Blaz Kavcic and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan also prevailed in their opening round over Mexican wild cards Hans Hach Verdugo and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela 7-6(3), 3-6, 11-9. The Slovenian-Indian duo will next play second seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Treat Huey.
