Andreescu stuns Mladenovic to reach first WTA QF in DC

WASHINGTON, DC, USA - Seventeen-year-old Bianca Andreescu sent shockwaves through the Citi Open draw on Thursday, as the Canadian ousted No.2 seed Kristina Mladenovic in the second round, 6-2, 6-3 to reach her first WTA quarterfinal.

Andreescu broke the Frenchwoman's serve five times in the match, taking advantage of Mladenovic's 10 double faults and subpar first serve percentage (38%) to cruise to the stunning upset in one hour, 14 minutes.

Teenager Bianca Andreescu continued her breakout Citi Open on Thursday, upsetting No.2 seed Kristina Mladenovic in straight sets.
The result marks the first top 20 victory for a player born in the year 2000, as the World No.167 scored the stunning victory in her first career match against a top 20 opponent.

After falling behind a break in the opening set at 0-2, Andreescu quickly found her feet, and won the next three games with the loss of just three points to pull into the lead.

The teenager's momentum continued in a big way to close out the opening set, as she snagged a second break in the sixth game, and streaked to a virtual bagel in 36 minutes as her run of games won extended to six to close out the set.

Mladenovic had three chances to get the opener back on serve in a key seventh game, but Andreescu came through the battle and added an insurance break in the ensuing game to pocket a one set lead.

The second set began in similar fashion, as Mladenovic engineered the first break after taking a 0-40 lead, but Andreescu responded immediately to pull the set even, and the two continued on serve until the Canadian scored her second break of the set, again in the sixth game.

For the duration, Andreescu never allowed Mladenovic another break point opportunity, and close out her first top 20 win on serve on her second match point.
