Alora honored to be PH's flag-bearer at SEA Games

MANILA, Philippines – Being named as the Philippines' flag-bearer to the 2017 Southeast Asian Games came as a surprise to veteran taekwondo jin Kirstie Alora, despite her long and successful history of representing the country in international tournaments.

"At first, hindi po ako makapaniwala," Alora admitted during the send-off for SEA Games athletes last week. "Parang, bakit ako?"

Thanks to encouragement from her family, friends, and teammates, Alora embraced the honor of carrying the flag in the opening ceremony – a role previously fulfilled by athletes like volleyball star Alyssa Valdez, wrestler Jason Balabal, and boxer Rey Saludar.

For Alora, the honor of being the flag-bearer also serves to motivate her to perform at a high level, knowing that she will be in the spotlight during the official start of the Games.

"I'm proud and more inspired to strive harder to produce a medal, kasi siyempre, sa akin nakatingin 'yung mga tao, because I'm the flag-bearer," she said.
