Wimbledon winner Muguruza joins multiple major club
LONDON, Great Britain - Despite arriving to the All England Club under the radar, GarbiƱe Muguruza was always confident in her ability to be more than a One Slam Wonder.
"I never thought I was just going to win one Slam," Muguruza said after her Wimbledon triumph on Saturday. "It's just hard when you're playing really good and you want to keep that [level], and maybe it doesn't happen.
Muguruza took seven big steps over the fortnight, surviving a thrilling three-setter with top seed Angelique Kerber before winning the final nine games of the championship match against five-time Wimbledon winner Venus Williams.
Adding to her 2016 French Open victory, the Spaniard doubled her major haul, tying her among active players with Kerber, Petra Kvitova, Victoria Azarenka, and Svetlana Kuznetsova, each of whom have won two major titles.
Kerber heads to the US Open as the defending champion, while Kvitova last won a major title in 2014 at Wimbledon, Azarenka in 2013 at the Australian Open, Kuznetsova in 2009 at Roland Garros.
Muguruza also joins Kerber and Muguruza as half way to the Career Grand Slam, with only the hardcourt majors at the Australian and US Open missing from her resumƩ.
