Wesley So punctuates Euro trip by clinching tournament title in Spain

Wesley So capped off his five-weeklong European tour by winning the Torneo Magistral de Ajedrez Ciudad de León in the Spanish city of León on Sunday.

The 23-year-old took home the title at the expense of former world chess champion and former world No. 1 Viswanathan Anand of India.

According to a report posted on Chess.com, So, a Bacoor, Cavite native who now represents the US national chess federation, went through two semifinal matches and two blitz games against Poland's Jan-Krsysztof Duda to set up a finals match with Anand on Sunday.

So, the youngest player to surpass the 2600 ELO rating, beat Anand in the blitz game, then held the Indian GM to a draw in the second to win the crown.

Ranked No. 1 in the US and No. 3 in the world based on the latest FIDE world chess rankings, So began his trip of Europe in the city of Stavanger for the Norway Open, which ran from June 5 to 17. He drew all 9 matches to place 5th.

So then proceeded to Paris for the French leg of the Grand Chess Tour (GCT) from June 21 to 25, where he finished 7th out of 10 participants.
