Sevastova, Suárez Navarro charge into Bucharest quarterfinals
BUCHAREST, Romania – Top seeds Anastasija Sevastova and Carla Suárez Navarro are locked into a collision course after powering into the quarterfinals in straight sets at the BRD Bucharest Open.
No.1 seed Sevastova, playing the last match of the day, fought past tricky conditions and the determined Danka Kovinic to win 6-4, 6-4.
"It's different to play in the night,” Sevastova explained. “It got dark, and it's tough to see the balls sometimes, but in the end I got used to it. I was happy that I won in two sets.”
Sevastova needed an hour and 28 minutes to wrap up the tight, straight sets encounter, which saw her break four times and drop serve just once.
“It's tough to play [Kovinic], she doesn't give any rhythm so I didn’t have any rhythm in the game at all,” she explained. “I was happy that I got through my servings game quite easy. She's a good server and she attacks."
No.2 seed Suárez Navarro wrapped things up against Romanian wildcard Elena-Gabriela Ruse earlier in the day, notching a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
"It was tough, I played good I mean I was all the time there and a few moments I felt a little but tired but I'm happy with the way I finished the match,” the Spaniard said.
“All the time when you play with a crowd with you is different, also you feel more focused, more motivated on your game, and also you win."
No.3 seed Julia Goerges was also in action, taking out Aliaksandra Sasnovich needing a tiebreak to close out a tight straight sets 7-6(4), 6-3.
"I think today was a very good match for both of us,” she said. “It was very close and even though there were two sets but I felt like the score, everything was very tight. I am pretty satisfied that I got through this one.”
Romania’s Ana Bogdan rounded out the day’s singles matches, defeating Cagla Buyukakcay 6-4, 7-5 to claim a spot in the quarterfinals.
