SEA Games sked poses hurdle for Eric Cray's double-gold dream
Eric Cray's chances of retaining his twin gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games became doubtful, as the two events he's favored to win are scheduled on the same day.
The Philippines' top sprinter won the 100 meters and the 400-meter hurdles in the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore. He bolstered his title defense in the Games' 400 meters, following his gold-winning performance in the recently concluded Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, India.
Although the goal is to top both events in the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games, Cray on Wednesday said competing in the two races with little recovery time will be "tough."
Philip Ella Juico, president of the national governing body for track and field, told ABS-CBN News previously that he had emailed Malaysian SEA Games organizers asking if they could move one of the events to a different date.
On Wednesday, Juico said in a text message that he hasn't received a response, although "it looks like they won't change it."
It's common practice for member countries to exploit the advantages that come with hosting the SEA Games. National organizing committees are allowed to choose which sports to play, depending on the availability of the host nation's resources.
