Returning Slaughter still adjusting Ginebra's style of play
MANILA, Philippines — Even after pacing the Barangay Ginebra in his first game in almost a year, Greg Slaughter is still trying to fit in.
The 7-footer led the Kings with 14 points and added 14 rebounds to his line of the night in a losing effort against last year’s Finals foe Meralco Bolts in the PBA Governors’ Cup Sunday.
“I’m coming in after over [nearly a] year. During that time we really had a lot of success,” the big man said. “It’s up to me to try to figure out how to fit in with everyone. We have a different style of play now. So I’m looking how I can fit in, help everyone else, complement our team to be better.”
During the center’s absence, Ginebra has won a championship and made a return trip to the conference finals. His last game was in Sept. 9, 2016, when his Kings took on Mahindra. He aggravated his knee that night, leading to the months-long recovery.
The former Ateneo de Manila University standout, who has been frequently penciled as June Mar Fajardo’s rival, looked like he didn’t come from 10 months of rehabilitation, as he played for 30 minutes.
“Whatever’s best for the team,” he said of his minutes. “If I gotta play 10 minutes for us to have success, that’s fine. If I gotta play more minutes, I’ll be ready for that.”
