Reserves star in India blowout, as medal finish still in play for Gilas
Gilas Pilipinas’ reserves haven’t left much of a glaring impact in the team’s Jones Cup campaign. When given the opportunity, however, they’re ready to answer the call.
Von Pessumal scored 11 of his 14 points in a hot-shooting 2nd quarter, as Gilas coasted to a 101-70 win over India at Taipei Peace Basketball Hall on Saturday.
The win raised Gilas’ record to 5-3 and remained in contention for a bronze medal. The Philippines needs to beat Iran in its final game on Sunday to put it in a better position to grab a top-3 finish.
Matthew Wright led Gilas with 19 points, while 3rd-string playmaker Almond Vosotros also finished with 14 points.
Wright was a perfect 5 of 5 from 3-land, while Pessumal shot 4 of 10 and Vosotross 4 of 7 from deep.
Overall, Gilas made 17 out of 36 (47%).
Christian Standhardinger chipped in 10 points, while Carl Bryan Cruz made 9 points, all on 3-pointers.
