Pinoy chessers deliver
THE Philippines did the country proud by winning three gold and three silver medals in the 13th Asian Schools Chess Championship at the Liaohe Art Museum in Panjin, China.
Al-Basher Buto led the Filipinos’ strong showing by bagging the gold medal in the boys seven years old and under rapid category with a perfect score of seven wins in seven matches.
Buto, the seven-year-old campaigner from Marawi City, bucked a slight fever to clinch the title with a two-point winning margin over Chen Zhiyuan of China and Kunal Patil Aditya of Indonesia.
Zhiyuan and Aditya both scored five points for the silver and bronze medals.
Asia’s first GM Eugene Torre lauded the Filipinos’ strong showing in the week-long competition.
“Our players have again shown they are capable of beating our Asian rivals given the proper training and motivation,” said Torre.
