Phoenix, NLEX gun for back-to-back wins

Phoenix and NLEX will each go for a second straight victory when they battle separate foes in the PBA Governor’s Cup at Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday.

The Fuel Masters, still fresh off their 118-105 morale-lifting win over Kia, will face the Alaska Aces at 5 p.m., while the Road Warriors battle Kia at 5 p.m.

Phoenix import Eugene Phelps.
Phoenix coach Ariel Vanguardia said his team wants to build on the momentum of its opening-day win.

“We’re very ambitious this conference. I think we have the chemistry to go to that next level,” he said in an interview posted on the PBA website.

One factor going for the Fuel Masters is the return of import Eugene Phelps, who torched Kia for 33 points and 14 rebounds despite an injured finger.

NLEX coach Yeng Guiao feels the same level of confidence ahead of his squad's game against Kia. The Road Warriors have already won three straight dating back to the tail end of the Commissioner’s Cup.

"We don't want to feel too good about ourselves because we don't really consider winning one game as life-changing," Guiao said, referring to NLEX's 112-104 victory over Alaska. "But winning the first game in a conference is a big encouragement for us.”
