NLEX's perfect start continues with win over Phoenix
MANILA, Philippines – The NLEX Road Warriors' sensational start to the 2017 PBA Governors' Cup continued on Sunday, after they outlasted the Phoenix Fuel Masters, 95-91, at the Araneta Coliseum.
Five players scored in double-digits, but it was Carlo Lastimosa and Alex Mallari who shone brightest in the clutch as NLEX improved to 4-0, good for the solo lead.
Lastimosa made up for a couple of bad plays early in the fourth period by anchoring a crucial 13-2 run that turned a 68-78 deficit into a 81-80 lead, and Mallari ensured that there would be no comeback from Phoenix by drilling in the dagger triple with just 9.5 seconds left to play to make it 93-87.
"It's a really nice win for us. We're starting to look like a team," said NLEX coach Yeng Guiao. "We've been winning games in the end game, we've been able to hold our own and pull through in the crisis situations. That's a good sign for a team that's really just trying to put it together."
Guiao, who often cut a frustrated figure during NLEX's two-win campaign in the Commissioner's Cup, admits he is not fully convinced that his team has turned a corner.
"We have four wins, but hindi ko pa din alam kung totoo ito or kunya-kunyarian pa lang," he said. "So let's see."
