Muguruza eases past Wickmayer at Wimbledon
LONDON, Great Britain - Former finalist GarbiƱe Muguruza never lost serve as she dispatched Belgium's Yanina Wickmayer in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, in the second round at Wimbledon on Thursday.
"I felt good. I had an aggressive player in front of me, very aggressive. I think she goes for her shots, and that's difficult to face in a grass tournament, but I'm happy the way I'm handling the matches, especially those first rounds where I always say it's very difficult," Muguruza said after the match.
"I'm always adapting to all type of games, so I'm happy that I'm facing these players very aggressive, because I'm also an aggressive player."
The Spaniard was on song for the entirety of the 80-minute encounter on No.3 Court against the former US Open semifinalist, doubling up in winners (20) to unforced errors (10).
A break in the fourth game of the opener helped Muguruza on her way to pocketing the eight-game set, as she added an insurance break to seal it.
In the second set, neither player faced a break point over the first seven games, and after Wickmayer saved a pair to level the set at 4-4, she carved out a 0-40 opportunity on the Spaniard's delivery - looking to extend a match between them to a final set for the first time.
However, Muguruza served her way out of trouble - literally - as a service winner, a backhand winner and an ace helped her dig out of the hole and hold on to her serve before finally breaking through to finish the match.
Though she won 84 percent of the points behind her first serve when she made them, and matched Muguruza with five aces, Wickmayer was undone by a low first-serve percentage, landing just over half of them in the match.
It was on the second serve that the Spaniard pounced, as she won 70 percent of the points played when Wickmayer offered up a second delivery.
With the victory, Muguruza will face Sorana Cirstea in the third round for a place in the second week.
