Kontaveit sweeps Witthoeft to round out Gstaad semis
GSTAAD, Switzerland -- No.3 seed Anett Kontaveit rolled into the semifinals of the Ladies' Championship Gstaad on Friday with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over German No.6 seed Carina Witthoeft.
Though the match was delayed at the start due to rain, Kontaveit was sharp throughout the 64-minute encounter, as she broke serve four times to move through to her third WTA semifinal of the season.
"It was really good to get on court today. I thought I managed to play pretty well, the conditions weren't easy - but tried to stay focused and do my thing," Kontaveit said. "[Another semifinal] really great, I've been having good results recently and it's definitely building up my confidence, and I'm feeling good on court."
The peers previously met last month on the grass of the Ricoh Open, where Kontaveit surrendered just four games en route to winning her first career title - and the match was similarly straightforward for the World No.32 on clay on Friday.
Kontaveit broke to start, and claimed the first two games - which both went to deuce - to set the tone for the match. The No.3 seed earned an insurance break in the seventh game, and never faced a break point on serve in the entirety of the opening set, which she serve out to 15.
In the second set, Witthoeft battled hard, as the first four games went with serve before the Estonian moved in front by a break after coming through the longest game of the match.
However, the German responded with her best returns of the afternoon, as she built a 0-40 lead and got the set back on serve, but Kontaveit quickly regrouped from there, and broke again immediately, to see the match out in straight sets.
To reach her third WTA final of the year, Kontaveit will have to go through the Cinderella story of the week: Tereza Martincova. The World No.140, who took out top seed Caroline Garcia in the second round, continued her breakthrough week with a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 win over Germany's Antonia Lottner.
"I don't think I've played her before. She's had a really good week, so it's definitely going to be a tought match," Kontaveit assessed. "She's beaten some good players, so she's definiely confident. I'm just going to try to fight every point as I do, and play my game."
