Kia hoping to fix dents along the way after dropping PBA Governors' Cup opener
MANILA, Philippines — Kia deputy head coach Chris Gavina knows it’s too early to sulk after a loss to Phoenix in the opening day of the PBA’s Governors’ Cup.
But he is equally aware that there’s a lot of chinks in the Picanto’s armor.
“A lot of gaps that we have to fill,” he conceded to reporters after a 118-105 beating in the hands of the Fuel Masters on Wednesday night. “We’re in a situation where we didn’t get to have a tune-up game and kind of fine-tune what we need to fix.”“We’re in in-season mode trying to see what needs to be done,” he added.
To be fair, Kia had some breaks going their way. They were able to score 20 off Phoenix’s turnovers and capitalize in transition. Their bench production were also neck-and-neck to that of the Fuel Masters, 73-75.
Markeith Cummings, the Picanto's reinforcement, had 31 points. Bong Galanza chimed in 15 markers while Chito Jaime and LA Revilla added 11 and 10, respectively. Picanto had two less turnovers, too, compared to Phoenix (16-18).
“I think the effort was there but the lack of attention to detail that is killing us right now,” Gavina rued.
