Japan tramples over Philippines in Asian U23 qualifiers
The Philippines took an 8-0 beating in the hands of Japan in the 2018 AFC Under-23 Championship qualifiers in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on Wednesday.
The Filipinos were utterly overmatched at National Olympic Stadium, according to AFC.com.
Ren Komatsu was unstoppable, finishing with 4 goals to lead the way for Japan.
“We were exposed and it’s always a challenge against teams like Japan, but we will have to learn from the experience,” said Philippines coach Marlon Maro.
Japan coach Uchiyama Atsushi said: “The Philippines were well-organized in defence and they did well on the counterattack, but we tried to show that we are stronger,” he said.
The qualifiers are part of the Philippine team's preparations for the coming Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur.
