Gilas Pilipinas drops Jones Cup opener to Canada
The new members of Gilas Pilipinas want to use the Jones Cup as a measuring stick of their progress as a unit and, if possible, win every game.
In Friday's opener, they had to settle for just one of the two.
Kiefer Ravena finished with 12 points and 3 steals, while Bobby Ray Parks Jr. added 11 points and also 3 steals, as the Philippines lost 90-77 to a taller Canadian squad at Taipei Peace International Basketball Hall on Saturday in Taiwan.
It was turnovers and missed 3-pointers that did Gilas in, as the Philippines, the tournament defending champion, trailed 44-34 at halftime after being limited to only 14 points in the 2nd quarter.
In the first half, the young Gilas squad shot just 37.1% from the field and connected on only 20% of its 3-pointers.
Gilas assistant coach Jong Uichico said the loss didn't take away from the team's ultimate objective.
