Gilas comes back by fending off Iraq
Gilas Pilipinas rebounded from their tough defeat to South Korea by outlasting a gritty Iraq squad, 84-75, in the W. Jones Cup at Taipei Peace International Basketball Hall on Thursday.
The Filipinos, led by import Mike Myers, who scored 16 points and 18 rebounds, held the Iraqis to just three points in the second quarter before nabbing the lead and pocketing their fourth victory in six games.
Kiefer Ravena added 13 markers and six assists, while RR Pogoy chipped in 12 points.
After a slow start that had Iraq leading 6-0, Gilas fought back before ending the first quarter down four, 15-19.
The Pinoys then clamped down on defense to smother the Iraqis in the second period as Matt Wright started a torrid run for Gilas with back-to-back triples. This gave Gilas a commanding 36-22 lead by the end of the half.
Kevin Ferrer’s corner three early in the fourth period widened the gap for the Filipinos to 18 points, 67-49.
