Garcia serves up Errani masterclass in Bastad
BASTAD, Sweden - No.3 seed Caroline Garcia played 54 minutes of nearly perfect tennis against Sara Errani, dropping just one game to ease into the quarterfinals of the Ericsson Open in Bastad.
After needing to come back from a set down yesterday to oust Irina-Camelia Begu in a rollercoaster battle, Garcia kept things much tidier against the Italian on Wednesday, notching a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
“It was definitely a good match, very different from yesterday - her game suits me a little bit better than the game of Begu,” Garcia said after the match. “But it’s always been a battle in the past against Sara, so I’m very happy with the way I played today.
“I had good timing and everything was going well. I’m happy it was fast.”
Garcia had a stellar serving day against Errani, firing off nine aces and allowing Errani just one look at a break point all match long. In fact, four of Garcia’s seven service games were won to love, with a fifth game won at 15.
She stepped into the court to keep Errani’s vulnerable serve under pressure, breaking the Italian five times in total.
“This clay is a little bit different than the one we’re used to seeing, at the French Open for example,” she explained. “It’s a little bit harder to be in a defensive position here, so I tried to be very aggressive on every single shot. She had some trouble to run from side to side.
“It’s very special for me and all of us to see the support for women’s tennis here in Bastad, it’s a very nice thing.”
Garcia will be back on court on Friday to take on the winner of tomorrow’s second round clash between No.6 seed Kiki Bertens - who swept the singles and doubles titles last week in Gstaad - and Czech qualifier Barbora Krejcikova.
Also through to the quarterfinals, No.7 seed Katerina Siniakova edged past qualifier Arantxa Rus 7-6(3), 6-4; No.2 seed Anastasija Sevastova eased past wildcard Elizaveta Kulichkova 6-2, 6-3; and Aleksandra Krunic took down Viktoriya Tomova 7-5, 6-4.
