Clutch Coronel thrilled to deliver in 'road' win for Perpetual
MANILA, Philippines – University of Perpetual Help swingman AJ Coronel downplayed his heroics for the Altas in their exciting 63-60 victory over Mapua University on Thursday, insisting that he was only doing his job for his squad.
It was Coronel who gave the Altas the lead for good with just 2:10 left in the game, smartly cutting into the middle of the line for a lay-up. One possession later, he knocked down a booming three-pointer from the corner to put his team on top, 60-56.
They survived two late three-point attempts from Mapua's Andoy Estrella and Almel Orquina to finally secure their first win of NCAA Season 93, after opening the tournament with two straight losses.
"Hindi naman actually (nag) take charge," said the 20-year-old Coronel, who scored five of his 10 points in crunch time. "Sa amin kasi, kung sinong bukas, 'yun ang hinahanap. Swerte lang, ako 'yung nakita. Ginawa ko lang para manalo 'yung team."
For Coronel and the rest of the Altas, their win over the Cardinals served as balm to the frustration that they have been dealing with since they were forced to forfeit their victory over De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (CSB) in their first game.
"Gustong-gusto naming manalo," Coronel said emphatically. "Two games, talo. Na-frustrate talaga kami sa Benilde – win na, nawala pa."
