Araña boosts Archers stock in GlobalPort
MANILA, Philippines - GlobalPort enlisted Ryan Araña from the free agent pool after the former La Salle Archer was left out in the Kia Picanto lineup for the coming PBA Governor’s Cup unfolding July 19 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Coach Franz Pumaren said they would need Araña’s services, particularly on defense, as the team continued to beef up its roster after trading Von Pessumal for San Miguel Beer center Arnold Van Opstal.
“I think we need somebody like him – tough defender, knows how to adjust to our system right away, high basketball IQ, and he will find ways to stop you,” said Pumaren, who coached Araña in their La Salle days.
At GlobalPort, Araña and Van Opstal will be with two other former La Salle stars in Mike Cortez and Rico Maierhofer.
The team is owned by 1-Pacman Rep. Mikee Romero, who himself is also a former Archer.
