Air Force bounces back, keeps UP winless in PVL

MANILA, Philippines – The Air Force Lady Jet Spikers got back on the winning track on Wednesday by taking down the University of the Philippines (UP) Lady Maroons in straight sets in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Buoyed by a sensational win in an extended first set, the Lady Jet Spikers came away with a 29-27, 25-16, 25-22 victory to rebound from their four-set loss to Creamline last Sunday and improve to 2-1 in the league standings.

Four players scored in double-digits for the veteran Air Force team, led by Iari Yongco's 15 markers built on 13 attacks and two kill blocks. Jocemer Tapic had 12 points, including two blocks and two aces, while Mary Ann Pantino scored 11 and Joy Cases had 10.

"Siguro nga, 'yun na ang pinakamaganda (na laro) namin, pero marami pang lapses," said Air Force coach Jasper Jimenez after the game. "Marami pang kulang, especially doon sa defense namin sa taas, hindi pa ma-organize."

The Lady Jet Spikers' veteran experience was a factor in the opening set, when they saved three set points to turn back UP, 29-27. A huge rejection on Isa Molde proved instrumental for Air Force as they seized the lead, 28-27, and never looked back.

"Buti nakuha namin ang first set," said Jimenez. "Kung nakuha nila 'yun, magtutuloy-tuloy 'yun. Buti na-stop namin at nakuha namin ang first set. Malaking bagay sa amin 'yung first set na 'yun."
