After Marcial now comes Suarez to PH boxing team
Veteran Charly Suarez will join top gun Eumir Felix Marcial on the six-man boxing team that will attempt to retain the overall title in the 29th Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Malaysia next month.
Suarez, the perennial best bet at lightweight, will move up in weight and compete at light-welter while Marcial will try his luck at middleweight as Malaysia organizers don’t have events in their original divisions.
Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines (ABAP) executive director Ed Picson also named light-fly Carlo Paalam, fly Ian Clark Bautista, bantam Mario Fernandez and Fil-British light-heavy John Marvin as the other members of the team.
Bautista and Fernandez were gold medalists two years ago in Singapore.
“All of them are strong contenders for the gold and I will stand by that,” said Picson. “But am guaranteeing that? No way, but they’ll be competitive and they will do their best and they are determined to get the gold.”
The SEAG box competitions will take place from Aug. 20 to Aug. 24.
