Solid Cilic Growing In Confidence At Queen's
Marin Cilic was solid on serve at the Aegon Championships on Thursday when he booked his spot in the quarter-finals for the sixth time in 11 visits to The Queen’s Club.
World No. 7 Cilic, the highest-ranked player left in the ATP World Tour 500 tournament draw, swept past #NextGenATP American qualifier Stefan Kozlov 6-0, 6-4 in 65 minutes.
"I don't feel any extra pressure or any more confidence," said Cilic. "I'm just focused on my own things, my part of the court, trying to do that well. I've been playing well really since the clay season started... But, I still have to work to improve some areas of my game and maybe get better day after day."
The 2012 titlist, seeded fourth this week, won 20 of his 21 first-service points – and lost seven points overall – for his 21st match win of the season. He now plays American Donald Young. Cilic won 30 of 30 first-service points in his 7-5, 6-3 first-round win over John Isner on Tuesday.
Sam Querrey, the 2010 champion, struck 15 aces once again for the second successive match to book a place in his third quarter-final at the prestigious London club. The American, who will now face Gilles Muller, worked his way past Andy Murray’s conqueror, Jordan Thompson, 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and 11 minutes on a windy day. Querrey also hit 15 aces in his first-round win over Cameron Norrie.
#NextGenATP Russian Daniil Medvedev is one match win away from reaching his second ATP World Tour semi-final after he struck 12 aces and won 27 of his 28 first-service points in a 6-2, 6-2 win over Australian wild card Thanasi Kokkinakis, who had beaten World No. 6 Milos Raonic on Tuesday.
“Of course I was nervous,” said Medvedev, the 2016 Top Tecnifibre Young Gun. “I am nervous almost before every match I play. And especially when you go on the Queen's Club centre court for the first time. You are a bit tight. But I managed to come through it and I played some really good tennis. I'm happy with my win.”
Medvedev, who is No. 6 in the Emirates ATP Race To Milan for a spot at the Next Gen ATP Finals, goes onto face 2014 titlist Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-finals.
Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, straight off a run to the Mercedes Cup final in Stuttgart (l. to Pouille), also produced a fine service performance – winning 95 per cent of his first service points and hitting 12 aces – to beat qualifier Jeremy Chardy and prove at 35 years of age that he is remains a dangerous opponent for anyone on mown lawns. The 2014 runner-up now meets seventh seed Tomas Berdych on Friday.
