San Beda holds off UP for FilOil Final 4 spot
MANILA, Philippines – The San Beda Red Lions became the third NCAA team to advance to the Final 4 of the FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup after fending off a late charge by University of the Philippines, 65-56, on Wednesday in San Juan.
Robert Bolick led the Red Lions' charge in the third quarter that allowed them to pull away, 45-33, after settling for a one-point lead, 27-26, at halftime.
The Fighting Maroons were able to stay within striking distance thanks to Ibrahim Quattara, whose lay-up made it a nine-point game, 55-46, with still more than three minutes left. However, Arnaud Noah and Bolick conspired to keep San Beda ahead, with Bolick's lay-up making it a 61-48 contest with just 96 seconds to play.
UP, however, refused to go down easily. A lay-up by Quattara and a pair of free throws from Diego Dario made it a nine-point game anew, and Bolick was called for an unsportsmanlike foul that sent Jun Manzo to the line for two charities.
The Fighting Maroons made the most of the bonus possession, with Juan Gomez de Liano knocking down a jumper that made it a five-point game, 56-61, with still 42 seconds left.
San Beda was able to hold on in the closing stretches, with Noah and Joe Presbitero making free throws to ice the game while the Red Lions forced UP to commit turnovers in their final two possessions of the contest.
