Pogoy’s star rising
PBA rookies would either be riding on the bench or cracking under pressure in their first-ever finals game. But TNT KaTropa’s Roger Pogoy defied the norm after a terrific Game 1 performance in the Commissioner’s Cup title series that made others think that he’s a seasoned veteran.
While most of the focus were solely on TNT import Joshua Smith’s game-winner and his injured right foot in Wednesday’s 104-102 victory over the San Miguel Beermen, Pogoy came away with a career-high 27 points.
Highlighting his debut in the PBA’s grandest stage was a 13-point fourth quarter that saw him knock down two triples early in the period that gave KaTropa a big lead that made things difficult for the Beermen.
Pogoy’s outing may have surprised many, but his longtime coach Nash Racela was nonchalant.
“Well, to me, I think what I got from Roger were the normal things that we were getting all along,” said Racela, who mentored Pogoy for three UAAP seasons at Far Eastern University marked by a championship in 2015.
“Maybe it was extra special because he scored a lot. Twenty-seven? But again, his defense was crucial and that’s something that we always require of him,” he added. “I think he was just blessed to hit three-pointers. That’s something that is part of his arsenal.”
