Newcomers Amer, Alas, Jose take pride in Gilas call-ups
MANILA, Philippines – NLEX guard Kevin Alas, Meralco guard Baser Amer, and Cignal forward Raymar Jose could have opted not to attend the Gilas Pilipinas practice on Tuesday night at the Meralco Gym.
After all, Alas and Amer were not required to show up by coach Chot Reyes, and Jose was just coming off a game for the Hawkeyes in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup where he tallied a double-double in the victory.
Yet all three players were there on Tuesday night for their first ever practice as part of the senior team. They have all worn the national team colors before, with Alas and Amer competing in the Southeast Asian Games, and Jose playing in the SEABA Stankovic Cup.
Playing for Gilas Pilipinas, however, brings with it a special kind of pride.
"Grateful ako for the chance to be practicing with the Gilas pool," said Alas, who was called up by Reyes as NLEX's new representative to the national team after Bradwyn Guinto was traded. "I'm happy to serve."
"I'll do my best and give my best," he promised.
