McGregor can use one MMA move on Mayweather, says Showtime exec

A Showtime executive said that Conor McGregor will be allowed to execute one mixed martial arts (MMA) move when he squares off with Floyd Mayweather Jr. inside the boxing ring.

Stephen Espinoza, executive vice president of Showtime Sports, which will promote the Mayweather-McGregor fight on pay-per-view, said McGregor can use the “superman punch.”

“I've been talking to the guys about this. I think a superman punch is well within the rules," he said in an interview on Fight Hype.

The move involves bringing the rear leg forward to feign a kick, then snapping the leg back while throwing a cross, resulting in greater power behind the punch.

"A back fist probably wouldn't be (allowed), but there's a lot of different things that can be done to throw off timing from strange angles,” Espinoza said. “I can guarantee you Floyd's never seen anyone coming in throwing a superman punch before."

The superman punch is typically used in muay Thai, sanshou and Burmese boxing. Later, it was incorporated into MMA.
