La Salle advances, Ateneo ousted as FilOil Preseason quarterfinals are set
Ben Mbala scored an eye-popping 45 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to lead De La Salle past Letran 93-77 in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament held at Filoil Flying V Centre on Friday.
But the Green Archers didn't know whether they would advance to the next round following the win, until San Beda beat Ateneo, 82-67, a result that towed La Salle into the quarterfinals.
Mbala, who battled the flu, may have been an imposing presence for La Salle, but head coach Aldin Ayo credited his team's selflessness for the win.
“Good game kasi ito iyong laro na pinakamadami kaming assist. We were moving the ball,” said Ayo, whose team recorded 20 assists.
La Salle closed out the preliminary round with a 5-3 record, a game better than Ateneo (4-4).
With its convincing win over the Blue Eagles, San Beda finished with an 8-0 record.
