Kerber targets full fitness for Wimbledon
BIRMINGHAM, England - World No.1 Angelique Kerber has withdrawn from the Aegon Classic in Birmingham due to a hamstring injury - but says she is hopeful of returning to full fitness before Wimbledon.
"Of course I'm really sad to pull out from Birmingham, because I love this tournament and I have so many great memories, but I feel my left hamstring," she explained. "I don't want to risk anything before the big event [Wimbledon] in two weeks."
The German admitted she was disappointed not to get her grass-court season under way after a lacklustre clay-court swing, but added that she was focused now on preparing as fully as possible for Wimbledon - where she was runner-up to Serena Williams in 2016.
"After Paris, I sat down with my team," she said. "We have a few things that we've tried to change in my game, and this is what I will try right now."
