Gilas toughs out win over Israel in World Cup opener

Juan Gomez di Liano scored 8 points and AJ Edu provided the finishing touches on offense and defense, as the Philippines rallied to beat Israel 19-17 in the FIBA 3x3 Under-18 World Cup in China on Wednesday.

The Filipinos were down 14-11 when Gomez di Liano, an incoming freshman for University of the Philippines, and Edu sparked a comeback that put them in front 18-15.

Israel threatened after Tamir Schiller hit a 3-pointer to come within a point, but Edu's follow-up off Gomez di Liano's miss and steal in Israel's final possession preserved the win.

Edu, a highly touted center with Nigerian descent, finished with 4 points, while Encho Serrano, arguably the best player in local high-school basketball, added 7 for the Philippines, which got its campaign in Chengdu off to a thrilling start.

Play was intense, physical and entertaining all at the same time. And the Filipinos, seeded 7th in the tournament, met their 16th-seeded opponents' challenge head on.

It was Serrano who dazzled for Gilas at first, taking advantage of his speed and displaying his full arsenal of moves to score 6 of the team's first 10 points.
